Margaret's Musings: Welcome Year of the Horse!

In Chinese communities around the world, families will begin celebrating New Year's eve for the Chinese Lunar New Year, A.K.A., the "Spring Festival," as it is known in China. Chinese New Year is celebrated for 15 days and is the longest and most important Chinese Holiday. The year of the >Fire Horse officially starts on February 17th and ends on February 5th, 2027.

The Myth behind the Chinese Zodiac

The Chinese zodiac is made up of 12 different signs (all animals). In addition to the 12 signs, the calendar also includes 5 elements (earth, metal, water, wood, and fire) which have a strengthening or moderating influence upon the signs. Hence, in total, the Chinese calendar goes in a 60 year cycle (12 signs multiplied by the 5 elements). This is the Fire Horse year.

There is an interesting legend about the origin of Chinese zodiac. The Jade Emperor wanted to select 12 animals to be his palace guards. He preferred the Ox to be the first for its honesty and diligence, but out of everyone’s expectation, the smart Rat covertly hid on the Ox back and occupied the first place at the essential moment. So, the Ox is the second animal in the Chinese Zodiac.

If you have read my past year Musings, you know an important part of welcoming the New Year is to prepare for good luck and ward off bad luck.

Here are some common dos and don'ts for good luck during Chinese New year. These traditions and superstitions are meant to ensure a prosperous and lucky start to the New Year.

DOs

  • Clean your home: Clean your house before the New Year to sweep away bad luck and make room for good fortune.

  • Decorate with Red: Use red decorations like lanterns and couplets to symbolize happiness and good luck (The Starner Group's conference room is a lovely red with red candies for all who visit).

  • Give Red Envelopes: Give red envelopes (hongbao) with money to children and unmarried adults for good luck.

  • Wear New Clothes: Wear new clothes, preferably in red, to symbolize a fresh start and good fortune.

  • Eat lucky foods: Enjoy foods like fish, dumplings, and oranges, which are believed to bring prosperity and good luck.

  • Pay off your debts before the New Year!

  • Use fireworks galore - In the old days, bamboo was set on fire, the crackling flames are meant to frighten the evil spirits. Modern day fireworks have taken the place of bamboo but are still thought to do the same thing.

DON'Ts

  • Avoid cleaning on New Year's Day: Don't sweep or take out the garbage on New Year's Day to avoid sweeping away good luck.

  • No Unlucky Words: Avoid using negative words related to death, sickness, or bad luck.

  • Don't Wash Hair: Avoid washing your hair on New Year's Day to prevent washing away good fortune.

  • No Breaking Objects: Be careful not to break any dishes or mirrors, as this is believed to bring bad luck.

  • Do not lend or cry on the New Year...as it is thought that anyone who lends or cries on the New Year will be lending or crying all year round (this is how you keep complainers and children quiet).

  • Do not cut on New Year Day as you might cut away your good fortune.

Now for 2026
Fire Horse Year
Year of high-energy, transformative, and volatile.
Favors innovation, technological advancements, and proactive, independent actions

The 2026 Year of the Fire Horse (beginning February 17, 2026) is predicted to be defined by rapid changes, bold moves, and intense, "double fire" energy occurring once every 60 years. Will require flexibility as it moves at a fast, often chaotic, pace.

Key 2026 Predictions:

  • Theme: A "wildfire" pace that rewards bold, decisive action and innovation, particularly in tech and medicine. It marks a major, often uncomfortable, reset for personal and societal growth.

  • Career & Finance: The energy favors leadership, ambitious projects, and taking risks, but it requires careful management to avoid burnout or reckless, impulsive decisions.

  • Relationships & Social Life: A passionate, fiery year for romance, but also prone to sudden changes and potential break-ups.

  • Health: Due to the high intensity, stress management is crucial. The fiery, fast-paced nature suggests being cautious of accidents and keeping active.

  • Most Fortunate Signs: Dogs, Sheep, Tigers, and Horses are expected to have the most prosperous opportunities.

  • Embrace Flexibility: Be prepared to adapt quickly to unexpected shifts.

The lucky colors of 2026, Year of the Fire Horse, are red, yellow, gold, and white, which symbolize energy, prosperity, and vitality. Wearing these vibrant, warm, and rich shades helps attract good fortune and aligns with the dominant fire element of the year.

How did Horse get chosen to be one of the 12 Zodiacs

In ancient legend, the horse originally had wings and served as the Jade Emperor’s favored celestial steed. Loved too much and growing arrogant, it caused chaos by trying to force its way into the Dragon Palace and killed the tortoise guard. As punishment, the Jade Emperor removed its wings and imprisoned it under Kunlun Mountains for 300 years.

Over 200 years later, a human ancestor passed by, freed the horse, and the grateful animal vowed lifelong service. From then on, the horse helped humans in farming, transportation, and warfare, becoming an essential companion to humanity.

When the Jade Emperor later chose twelve zodiac animals, humans strongly recommended the horse because of its contributions, and it was accepted.

Your Prognostications for 2026 Fire Horse Year

The Fire Horse embodies bold action, speed, visibility, and rapid transformation.

Yang Fire is linked to the sun and lightning—bright, confident, decisive, and outward driven. It encourages leadership, risk taking, and stepping into the spotlight.

The Fire element adds energy, enthusiasm, and fast progress, while also intensifying emotions. It can bring breakthroughs but also magnify reactions, making patience and self control especially important.

With strong Fire fueling the Horse, 2026 is a dynamic year that supports initiative, movement, and visible achievement. At the same time, its intensity calls for thoughtful pacing to avoid impulsive decisions or unnecessary pressure.

Overall, the Yang Fire Horse year is one of momentum and opportunity—where bold steps can lead to success, but balanced judgment helps prevent missteps.

(1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008, 2020)

In 2026, Rats may face some ups and downs.

They could shine at work and even get promoted, but the stress may wear them out. Money luck looks mixed—income may increase, yet unexpected expenses (like home repairs or medical bills for elders) could arise. Single Rats might fall in love but risk getting into an unhealthy relationship. Health wise, they should especially watch out for stomach and digestive issues.

Singles may meet someone special, and married Ox can enjoy a calm, happy family life.

Career luck isn’t strong—there may be lots of overtime and possible changes in leadership. Money may also feel tight, with no real increase in income, so it’s wise to save for emergencies.
