March is here…..
For me, windy March is always a special month because both of my daughters were born in March. Coincidentally, even though I had moved twice, they were born three years apart in the same hospital and I was in the same hospital room for both births.

Two sisters: Lise hugging Dana
Now, the big shocker, at least for me, is that my oldest daughter, Lise, who also happens to be Bruce’s wife, just turned 60! How could I be old enough to have a 60-year-old? Bruce and Lise wrestled with how to best celebrate this momentous birthday with family and friends in addition to a trip to the Galapagos.
Bruce came up with a great and somewhat unique idea. Lise’s heartthrob as a young 10-year-old was Donny Osmond. Her Uncle Rick even took her to a Donny Osmond concert in Memphis. She never forgot the experience. She grew up watching Donny and Marie Osmond's shows on TV and still knows many of his songs. Bruce decided to celebrate Lise’s 60th by seeing Donny Osmond perform at Harrah’s in Las Vegas. Lise loved the idea. They invited Lise’s immediate family and her best friend (+hubby) since first grade to a weekend in Las Vegas to see the Donny perform. We even attended a pre-show meet and greet. There were 11 of us. It was a perfect weekend to be in Vegas.

I hosted Lise’s birthday dinner at Wing Lei’s Chinese restaurant located in the Wynn. I highly recommend the restaurant, which I believe is the only Michelin-starred Chinese restaurant in the U.S. The service is top-notch, the food is authentic gourmet Cantonese, and it's beautifully presented.

While Lise enjoyed celebrating her 60th with memories of her youthful days, I’m now focusing on being a “longevity influencer.” My goal is to reframe the aging process, so we are comfortable with aging. The oldest-old (aged 85+) is the fastest-growing segment of the total population, doubling by 2036 and tripling by 2049. Many will be highly functional – think Warren Buffet. Much is written about the infirmities of aging, but my interest lies more in living an “able” life with purpose to the end. I, as well as many of you, are among the “oldest-old” who have been fortunate to be active and relevant as we aged.
For many years, I’ve been fascinated with studying longevity. I’ve visited and followed the findings of the MIT Age Lab as well as Laura Carstensen, head of the Stanford Center on Longevity. However, after my husband Roger passed away, I often wondered if there was something I could have done to prevent his death. Candidly, I probably couldn’t have done much. However, my regret and curiosity led me to realize how little I knew about how our bodies and environment change as we age. Most of us continue living and doing things the same as we did in our 30s and 40s. Maybe we are still too frugal. This is true whether it’s how we access medical services, the vitamins we take, how we take care of our skin, or the clothes we wear. Knee and hip replacements become common, and physical therapists become our best friends. Due to a lack of knowledge about aging, most of us are unprepared for managing it well.
My plan is to focus on helping our clients over 65 prepare for a fulfilling aging experience, beyond just financial confidence. Stay tuned! Feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns.
P.S. Happy Birthday to my daughter, Dana – today is her birthday!!

Sincerely,

Margaret C. Starner
