Wishing you a Happy Fourth of July
As is our family tradition, I’ll be celebrating the Fourth of July with my family at Bruce and my daughter Lise’s home in Glendale, California. For those who are new readers, this tradition began with my father, who celebrated his birthday every July 4th with a huge, all-are-welcome barbecue feast at our home in Shelby, Mississippi—fireworks galore included. We will be having our traditional barbecue with the same recipe my father used and has been shared with all in our family. Thanks to my sister, Judy, who has taken on the task of making my father’s traditional barbecue sauce for our family.
The July 4th tradition carried on at Lise and Bruce’s home when their eldest, Micaela, was born on July 4th. This year, Micaela turns 25—already a quarter of a century! And as if that wasn’t enough reason to celebrate, my daughter Dana also got married on July 4th. So yes, there’s always much to celebrate.
This year, we’ll also be honoring one of Roger’s final wishes: holding a military memorial and spreading his ashes in Lise and Bruce’s backyard—he especially loved their view. And from their patio, we can watch the city’s fireworks below.

Recently, I watched “The Life List” on Netflix. At first, it struck me as a light, somewhat soapy drama—entertaining, but not especially profound. The premise centers on the 13 life goals of a 13-year-old girl. But as I kept watching, I realized it carried a deeper message: that courage, determination, and hard work are essential to becoming our best selves. It’s often easier to settle for what life hands us than to strive for what we truly aspire to be.
That message reminded me not just of the value of personal financial planning, but of our Constitution. Like that young girl’s list, the Constitution is a guide—a framework for facing challenges and conflicts, embracing diverse beliefs, and working toward a stronger, more unified country.
Here’s to good food, loud laughter, lasting traditions—and a Fourth of July filled with fun, freedom, and family. Happy 4th, everyone!

Our office will be closed on
Friday July 4, 2025
Sincerely,

Margaret C. Starner
