Happy Fourth of July

Our office and the Market will close at
2:00pm on Monday July 3rd
and will be closed on
Tuesday July 4th

July 4th, as many long-time readers know, has always been a special holiday to my extended Chow family. My father was very proud that his birthday was July 4th, especially given he was a US naturalized citizen. After his mother passed away, Dad came to the US when he was 12 to join his father. While Dad had only 2 years (I think) of schooling in Memphis, he somehow learned enough to be very knowledgeable about being an American. And even though he never finished school in China or the US, he was a prolific reader of both Chinese and American papers and literature. I often think Dad should have been a professor or schoolteacher, but such opportunities didn’t exist for him. Instead, he opened and ran a very successful grocery store business. His understanding of behavioral finance (before there was such a word) and basic marketing concepts made him a pioneer in building (and helping other Chinese merchants build) successful small groceries in the Mississippi Delta. His teachings and marketing ideas influence me to this day. Amazing how his concepts and understanding of people have withstood the test of time. His basic belief: find out what your customers really want and deliver it! He even used his people skills to build a relationship with the Immigration Dept and a key MS Senator to help many Chinese immigrate to the US legally. In a way, everyone was a “customer”.

Back to celebrating the 4th of July. Dad was very social and always happy to celebrate any occasion, especially his and our country’s shared birthdays! Our home in Shelby was in the country, on the edge of town on the old highway 61. It was large enough to have huge parties and Shelby had no rules against fireworks. My dad always made his special barbecue sauce and lots of rib eye steaks. People came from far and near to join in the celebration feast and play mahjong into the wee hours of morning. The last big party celebrating his birthday was July 4, 1997 when he turned 80.

My Dad, James, born July 4, 1917 - always ready for fun

Coincidentally and to my joy, our first grandchild, Micaela (Bruce’s daughter) was born on July 4, 2000! This meant we had good reasons to continue our July 4th celebration, which we do most often at Bruce and Lise’s in Glendale, CA where we can also watch the fireworks from their hilltop home.

The family will gather again this July 4th at Bruce and Lise’s, where we always include my dad’s famous barbecue. My youngest sister, Judy and her husband, Bill Heath are now in charge of making the sauce and the delicious ribs for the family and the party.

This year we will have lots to celebrate at our July 4th family event in addition to Micaela’s birthday!

Excellence in Diversity & Inclusion Award

Barron’s is a registered trademark of Dow Jones & Company, L.P. All rights reserved. "Barron's Hall of Fame" is an award honoring a group of advisors who exemplify long-term success and commitment to their clients. Each member of the Hall of Fame has appeared in 10 or more of Barron's annual Top 100 Advisor rankings, and their long-looking commitment to excellence is a hopeful example for the industry to follow. The Top 100 Advisor rankings are based on data provided by individual advisors and their firms and include qualitative and quantitative criteria. Data points that relate to quality of practice include professionals with a minimum of 7 years financial services experience, acceptable compliance records (no criminal U4 issues), client retention reports, charitable and philanthropic work, quality of practice, designations held, offering services beyond investments offered including estates and trusts, and more. Financial Advisors are quantitatively rated based on varying types of revenues produced and assets under management by the financial professional, with weightings associated for each. Investment performance is not an explicit component because not all advisors have audited results and because performance figures often are influenced more by clients’ risk tolerance than by an advisor’s investment picking abilities. The ranking may not be representative of any one client’s experience, is not an endorsement, and is not indicative of advisor’s future performance. Neither Raymond James nor any of its Financial Advisors pay a fee in exchange for this award/rating. Barron’s is not affiliated with Raymond James.

Nominees for the 2020 InvestmentNews Diversity & Inclusion Lifetime Achievement Award must currently be working as financial planners, registered representatives or registered investment advisers, or as industry professionals in a role that supports financial advisers. InvestmentNews received about 130 nominations for the Diversity & Inclusions awards and selected 1 individual for the Lifetime Achievement award. The ranking may not be representative of any one client's experience, is not an endorsement, and is not indicative of future performance.
